Ever wonder where most of the electricity is used in your home?  What appliances or devices are responsible for the pulling down the big kWhs?

In the U.S., the average yearly electricity usage for a residential electricity customer is about 10,000 kilowatt hours, or about an average of just under 900 kilowatt hours per month.

Louisiana has the highest annual consumption at over 15,000 kWh and Maine the lowest at 6,367 kWh.

Texas is right up there at the top with an average of about 14,000 kWh annually, or about 1,100 kWh per month.

But, back to where in the home the electricity is used.  As one might expect the air conditioners are at the top of the list, followed by lighting, water heating, and refrigeration.  Of course, if you are using natural gas (or propane) to heat your water, that category wouldn’t be on your list at all.
